Football Coaching Strategy

When considering your football coaching strategy, there are many aspects that have to be looked at to come up with an effective strategy. Your strategies also have to change when team dynamics change as well. A coach who can alter his training mode depending on the personality and learning style of the athletes on the team can be more successful than someone who follows a standard set of training practices.

How do you become a better coach? A coach that can motivate their players, effectively communicate with their staff and who are able to help develop people’s skills in an empowering way are the most successful types of coaches. A coach that is to be feared isn’t typically an effective coach. A player who respects his coach is more likely to work hard and actively listen to advice.

Coaches who get the most out of their team do so partially by their coaching style. A football coaching strategy requires the coach to not only want their team to succeed but who wants each individual player to meet their own personal goals as well. Perhaps a goal is to kick better or improve their running or some specific type of score.

Coaches can use tools to help with their strategy such as using cameras to record games and practices so they can clearly look for a player’s strengths and weaknesses as well as to determine future strategy such as plays and line up.

Performance coaching includes the individual training plans of the team as well as the overall team strategy. A coach also needs to understand each athlete’s learning style. Some athletes learn by practice and repetition while others may benefit from watching someone else and replicating what they see. Special tools and equipment can help as well as drills.

A coach needs to be objective with team members and the other coaching staff members and be open to altering their own coaching style based on how others respond. A coach needs to look at the modal strength of others and determine whether they learn by visuals, by thinking, by auditory learning or by touching.

A coach who teaches young boys or girls versus adult boys or girls may need to adapt their styles differently and take into consideration that there are often dealings required with the parents as well as with the athlete themselves. A coach has to perfect the art of communication, the art of motivation, being able to be firm with reprimanding and to be able to show appreciation which can further empower the student.

Through improving their coaching skills and analyzing the team on a regular basis, a coach can not only improve the team’s statistics, the players grades in school when that is a factor and the number of wins versus losses but the coach can also make a lasting impression on the athlete to help them succeed and excel in everything that they do.

Coaching and training isn’t just about overall football coaching strategy, it’s also about sportsmanship and pride.
