The EVS-CDCAV (Coiled Data Cable) is a single cable that connects the remote and monitor to Sony camcorders through the "D' shaped connector.  It brings the picture down to the monitor so that you can see what the camcorder sees.  It turns you 7 inch LCD color monitor into the "view finder".  It's second function is to connect the Sony remote so that you are able to control all the functions of the camcorder.  You are able to zoom in and out, start and stop recording, and power the camcorder on and off.

This cable is custom made using coiled cable so that it can easily stretch to over 30 feet but coils back to a more managable length when you crank the system down.  That means there isn't 25 plus feet of cable to trip over when you are relocating or finishing a film session.
